The brief

The brief given by Robert Brooks, Chairman of Bonhams, to Clare Agnew of Agnew Design was to design a modern and international interior which would be a good background for the items that Bonhams auction. Inspired by Rembrandt, delivered by KI.

I decided to use earth colours, such as terracotta, which is a pigment used by Rembrandt alongside charcoal and white to give a modern appearance. I selected the Perry chairs for the auction room and lecture theatre as apart from being good looking they were very comfortable and the back is flexible and adapts to one’s weight.

Our solution

Perry Chairs - Most of the furniture for Bonhams was designed by Clare Agnew except for the stylish and elegant KI Perry, designed by the sculptor and designer Charles Perry. With a chrome-plated rod frame and polypropylene seats with an integrated handle within the back rest, Perry were selected for the multi-purpose lecture theatre as they are easily moved around enabling the room to be re-arranged for all the different purposes.

Clare Agnew designed the lecture theatre to be very dramatic, using Perry chairs with white seats and backs and chrome frames contrasting against the charcoal walls and grey carpet. Inspired by Rembrandt's use of the colour, terracotta chairs were selected for use in the auction rooms to give a colourful backdrop to the pieces on the auction block.

Perry from KI were selected due to their long seating comfort, which was very important for the lecture theatre.
