Saki Maruyama - Knotty

RCA & Imperial College - Innovation Design Engineering - High commendation

Unstructured, free and open-ended play can help children can develop their own creativity, agency and interests. Knotty is an intuitive and fun tool for children to explore and apply technology in a way that enhances their open-ended play and leverages their creativity. Its six input and output blocks can be joined together to create an array of amusing functions. By simply tying a knot from one block to another using Knotty’s ‘magic rope’, children can create their own toys. Knotty can be combined with and adapt to other materials such as cardboard, bottles or even as a wearable device. The experience of an entirely physical form of coding makes creating, iterating and playing with technology effortless and instinctive.
