West Calder High School

West Calder, Scotland

The brief

West Calder High School's transformative new facilities are the biggest ever single investment in education by West Lothian Council. The £32m project was officially opened in September 2018 by former Prime Minister and UN Special Envoy for Global Education, The Right Hon Gordon Brown.

This ambitious school features a blend of traditional classrooms as well as vast, open learning 'plazas' which facilitate more collaborative and interactive learning. This is designed to support the latest trends in educational methods, creating different spaces to suit different learning styles and personal preferences. This gives instructors and students more freedom to find the right surroundings for their unique needs and the task at hand.

The learning environment allows for a range of different activities, including multiple classes working in the same open space. This adjacency facilitates free circulation, movement and collaboration, creating new possibilities to share ideas. The behavioural dynamics of interactions between students has improved as well, adapting to the openness of the space. Utilising space in a way more akin to modern workplaces and universities, the school now provides a wealth of options of flexible and break-out spaces that enhance the learning experience beyond traditional classrooms.

The unique design features has really transformed the school community. It has enhanced the climate for learning and achievement. Collaboration is now a key feature and consistent feature across the school… This new way of learning and teaching will undoubtedly prepare students for life beyond school in that fast-changing world that they're moving into.

Our solution

The Postura+ presented an ideal seating solution for many of the areas in the school, providing comfort, bright colours and aesthetic consistency across different rooms and spaces. Working with Langstane Press, the school selected over 1,200 size 6 Postura+ chairs along with hundreds of Postura+ task chairs, stools and high chairs from a bright, energizing colour palette of Sugar Plum, Lime Zest, Aqua Blue, Tangerine Fizz, Grape Crush and Slate Grey.

Postura+ Chairs - Postura+ EN6 chairs were provided in 6 colours - over 1,200 chairs arranged in mixed colours throughout.

Postura+ Task Chairs - A number of task chairs in Sugar Plum were selected for IT rooms where movement and height adjustability are particularly important. Postura+ Stools & High Chairs - Located in both practical learning environment and blended spaces, these chairs and stools provide ergonomics and flexibility for dynamic, activity-based learning.

Postura+ Stools & High Chairs - Located in both practical learning environment and blended spaces, these chairs and stools provide ergonomics and flexibility for dynamic, activity-based learning.

We presented the school with a number of options to meet their specification of a one-piece polypropylene chair. The Postura+ was found to be more comfortable and was available in a great range of colours to tie in with the scheme.
